Let's Make Philadelphia Butter Cake

February 9, 2017 Jessie Moore

Have you ever heard of Philadelphia Butter Cake? It's sort of like St. Louis's famous gooey butter cake, but not quite the same.

I discovered this unique butter cake when I used to live in Philadelphia. Even within the city it's little known: you can mostly find it at bakeries along the northern periphery of the city. You know, the old-school types of bakeries. Usually, these bakeries sell it by the quarter sheet pan, which is a method of selling cake that I haven't seen before.

I think that this version came out pretty darned authentic. It has a great flavor: buttery, yes, but the yeast in the crust gives it a sort of "deeper" flavor. It's a perfect breakfast cake, in my opinion, eaten at the same times and in the same settings as crumb or coffee cake.
